Patent a Cell Phone Application

Question: Do you need to patent a cell phone application?

I have come up with an idea for a cell phone application. However, I am confused if I need to patent it or not. Can a patent be done on a cell phone application? And, if so, is it a design or utility patent? And, is it worth the expense of doing it? Would such patent have to compete with millions of existing patents?

Answer: A phone app could be a utility patent.

Whether you should patent it depends on your business. If you believe your total sales over the lifetime of the product exceeds the cost of the patent, then it might make sense to get a patent.
