Benefits & Costs Of Patenting My Invention

Question: What are the benefits of having my work patented? Question Detail: I have invented a cleaning formula that I eventually plan to market. What are the benefits of patenting my formula? How much does it cost to patent it? How long is the process? How protected is my invention if I decide to patent it?

Answer: A patent gives you the right to exclude others from making or selling your invention. If your competitors tend to knock off one another, a patent may help in preventing that. From filing your patent application to obtaining your issued patent might be 2-3 years. The cost varies widely, but we do these matters on a fixed cost basis.
